The name given by Western Europeans to the west coast of the African continent, along the Atlantic coast from what is now the Republic of Senegal to the Republic of Angola. In other words, it refers to a much larger area than the Gulf of Guinea. There is a theory that English and French navigators sailed along this coast in the 13th and 14th centuries, and the name Guinea is said to have spread as a corruption of Ghinea (also called Genni or Djenné), which flourished along the upper reaches of the Niger River in the 8th century, or the name of the Kingdom of Ghana, which flourished later.
