1868‐1958 German economist. Born in Vienna, Austria, he studied under K. Knies and M. Weber at the University of Heidelberg. He began teaching at the same university, then taught at the Technical University of Brünn, the Technical University of Munich, the University of Hamburg, and the University of Kiel, before moving to the University of Berlin in 1926. His research activities ranged from economics to technology, social philosophy, and epistemology. In economics, he was heavily influenced by the organismic theory of historical school economist Knies, but Gottl's argument that individuals have free will was overshadowed by Knies's, and he instead held that individuals are subordinate to a transcendental organism, or social construct.
