...The Oirat language is further divided into (1) the Kalmyk dialect (also called Kalmyk) and (2) other Oirat subdialects, namely, the Drubod and Bayt dialects in the Kobt region, the Turgut, Uryankha, Zakhatin, and Mingat dialects in the Altai region, and the Orot dialect in Dambi. The Oirat people wrote their language in the Todo script (meaning "clear" script, a slightly improved Mongolian script) invented in 1648 by the Khoshut monk Zaya Pandita, and this script is still used by the Oirat people living in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region of China. Since 1924 (the Latin script was also used for a time from 1931 to 1938), Kalmyk has been written in a script that is a slightly modified version of the Russian script. …
