Born of Aquitania Gaul, his ancestors had become Roman citizens and he was a senator himself. As governor of Gaul Lugdunensis (northeastern Gaul), he argued against Nero's tyranny and called for a return to senatorial traditions, and launched a rebellion in March 68. Nero was driven to suicide by the reaction of Spain, Africa, and Egypt, but Vindex also committed suicide after being defeated by Virginius Rufus on the Rhine front.
