…A new form of samba that emerged in Brazil around 1958. It was created by composer and pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-94) and singer and guitarist João Gilberto (1931- ). In contrast to the wildness and enthusiasm of previous samba styles, this form had an intellectual, calm sensibility and new harmonies influenced by West Coast jazz.
