Astronomical unit - Tenmontan-i

A unit of length used in astronomy. The average distance between the Earth and the Sun is called 1 astronomical unit, and it is mainly used to indicate the distance of celestial bodies in the solar system. The relationship with the MKS unit of length used on Earth is that 1 astronomical unit = approximately 149.6 million kilometers. For example, the semi-major axis of the orbit of Pluto, a dwarf planet in the solar system, is about 39.9 astronomical units, and the distance to the nearest star to the solar system (Alpha Centauri) is about 270,000 astronomical units.

天文学で用いられている長さの単位の一つ。地球と太陽との間の平均距離を1天文単位といい、主として太陽系内の天体の距離を示すのに用いられている。地球上で用いられているMKS単位系の長さとの関係は、1天文単位＝約1億4960万キロメートルである。たとえば、太陽系内の準惑星である冥王(めいおう)星の軌道長半径は約39.9天文単位、太陽系にもっとも近い恒星（ケンタウルス座α(アルファ)星）までの距離は約27万天文単位である。
