It appears in the teachings established in Pure Land Buddhism, and is a term that contrasts with the Shodo-mon. More specifically, it is called the Ojo Jodo-mon, which means the teaching of going to the Pure Land and attaining enlightenment. In the Anraku-shu by Doshaku, the founder of Chinese Pure Land Buddhism, he quotes the Mahasamasatra Sutra and teaches that in this age of the Latter Days of the Law, no one can attain enlightenment through self-training, but that the Jodo-mon is the only path that can lead anyone, no matter how evil they have committed, to attain Buddhahood. Honen (Genku), who established Japanese Pure Land Buddhism as an independent sect and perfected its teachings, divided the Pure Land sect into two types: one that truly explains the Pure Land, and the other that explains the Pure Land in a secondary way. He clarified that the former is the teaching of exclusive nembutsu, which is described in the "Three Pure Land Sutras" (the Sutra of Immeasurable Life, the Sutra of Contemplation of Immeasurable Life, and the Sutra of Amitabha) and Vasubandhu's Treatise on Pure Land. He taught that for foolish and evil people (ordinary people) in the Latter Day of the Law, the teaching of the Pure Land is the only way to attain Buddhahood, and that is to believe in the original vow and rely on the power of others and chant the Nembutsu.
