A general term for a family or genus of the order Stingray, or the name of one of its species. The family Urolophidae (English name: round rays) is characterized by a body disc that is almost equal in length and width, a short tail with a clearly rounded tail fin at the tip, no dorsal fin, and usually a single large spine near the center of the tail. Among the Urolophus genus, the stingray U. aurantiacus (English name: sepia stingray) is found in the waters off Japan. This species reproduces in a non-placental manner, viviparous, and once the fetus has absorbed its own egg yolk, it receives nutrition from the mother to grow. It lives on sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of 10 to 205 meters, and in the spring it gives birth to 2 to 4 young, each about 8 centimeters long. They grow to 40 centimeters long. They inhabit the continental shelves of the Pacific Ocean south of central Honshu, the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea. It is caught using bottom trawls and other fishing methods, and is used as an ingredient in fish paste products. It is listed as "vulnerable" (VU) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species (as of August 2021). ヒラタエイ属Urolophusのうち、日本近海にはヒラタエイU. aurantiacus(英名sepia stingray)が分布する。
