Also known as a blink comparator, this device detects celestial objects that are changing by comparing two photographs of the same star field taken at different times. An optical system including semi-transparent mirrors is arranged in the field of view of a microscope so that the two photographs appear to overlap. If you cover the light path with a shutter or something similar and look at the two photographs alternately, stars that have not changed will remain stationary, but celestial objects whose brightness is changing, such as variable stars and novae, will appear to flicker, and moving celestial objects such as asteroids and comets will appear to jump around, making them easy to find.
