Samudragupta (English spelling)

The second king of the Gupta dynasty in India (reigned c. 335-c. 376). Born to Chandragupta I and a queen from the Licchavi family. Succeeding his father, he expanded the dynasty's territory, subjugating not only the Ganges basin but also central and northwestern India, and even invading southern India and subjugating its dynasties. As well as being a warrior, the king also patronized the arts and literature, composing poetry himself and loving music. His achievements are recorded on a stone pillar inscription in Allahabad.

インド，グプタ朝第2代の王 (在位 335頃～376頃) 。チャンドラグプタ1世とリッチャビ家出身の王妃の間に生れた。父の跡を継ぎ王朝の領域を拡大し，ガンジス流域ばかりでなく，中央インドと北西インドを従え，さらに南インドに遠征してその諸王朝をも従属させた。王は武人であるとともに文芸を保護し，みずからも詩を作り，音楽を愛好した。王の事績はアラーハーバードの石柱銘に記されている。
