Tenmei Fire - Tenmei no Taika
The great fire of Kyoto in 1788 (Tenmei 8). The fire started in Miyagawa-cho (present-day Higashiyama Ward) on the east bank of the Kamo River, and spread south along the river, then crossed the river and spread from west to north, destroying most of the city (Rakuchu). Over 1,424 towns were burned down, along with 36,797 houses, 201 temples, and 37 shrines (Kokubo Family Documents).

1788年(天明8年)の京都の大火。鴨川東岸の宮川町(現東山区)から出火,宮川筋を南下,飛び火は鴨川を越えて西から北へ延焼,市街地(洛中(らくちゅう))の大部分を焼き尽くした。焼失町数1424町余,同軒数3万6797軒,同寺院201・神社37という(《古久保家文書》)。
