A basalt wonder stretching for about 5 km along the north coast of County Antrim in northern Northern Ireland, UK. Legend has it that it was built by giants to cross the island of Staffa on the west coast of Scotland, which has a similar wonder, and so the name means "giant's causeway." It was formed when lava flow cooled rapidly as it entered the sea, and thousands of hexagonal columns, some 40-50 cm in diameter and up to 6 m high, spread across a three-tiered plateau. There are also caves and huge rocks in the surrounding area, and it has long been known as a tourist destination, and in 1883 a train line was opened between Portrush, a stopover on the Giant's Causeway, and Bushmills.
