There are about 60 species of Machilus , mainly found in tropical Asia, but in Japan there is one other species, M. japonica Sieb.et Zucc., which is found in the warm temperate zone from Kinki to the west. The heartwood of Machilus is dark gray-brown to dark pink-brown, with an air-dry specific gravity of about 0.65.
