Gate bar; locking bar

Japanese: 閂 - かんぬき(英語表記)gate bar; locking bar
Gate bar; locking bar
Also written as nuki. A horizontal bar used to secure gates and other doors. This horizontal bar is supported by latches fixed in two or more places, and the bar to which this latch is attached is called a latch-holding bar. The latches are made of hard wood or iron bars. For double-door gates, latches made of zelkova, cypress, pine, or cedar are generally used. It can also refer to a vertical bar installed in early modern town houses from the shidomibari (sliding beam) to the threshold below to lock the door. A groove is made in the vertical bar to facilitate lowering the door stored on the shidomibari. It is removed during the day.
