A Vietnamese two-stringed kokyū. Written in Chinese as dan er. It is the same type as the Chinese jinghu, with a cylindrical wooden body with snakeskin stretched on one side and the other side open. The two strings are tuned in fifths, and the bow is placed between the two strings. With a range of more than two octaves and a large volume, it is used not only in chamber music but also in plays such as "hat boi." There are several similar instruments in Vietnam, including the dan gao, which uses a coconut resonator box. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
