Ring shout (English spelling)

...According to records from that time that described black worship on Sundays, they would dance in a circle, shuffling around counterclockwise, and the leader and the congregation would sing in unison, sometimes reaching a state of possession as the excitement grew. This is called a ring shout. The way white people worshiped during the revival movement was also said to be quite wild and enthusiastic, but the black ring shout clearly had African elements mixed in.
