Generally speaking, it refers to a specific individual or group having exclusive control over land (including water and all other natural resources available to humans). This control over land was established as land ownership only in capitalist societies, where private property was fully established, but even in societies prior to this, various regulations were in place regarding the occupation, use, and disposal of land, and specific individuals or groups were granted the right to use land in a specific area continuously and exclusively for a certain period of time.
