Udagawa Yoan

A Dutch scholar and doctor in the late Edo period. Born in Edo Gofukumongai Daiichigai, to a doctor of the Ogaki domain, Ezawa Yoju (whose real surname was Nakajima, he was from Echigo Mitsuke, and his pen name was Tenni Dojin, a Dutch scholar), and a mother, Ezawa Yoju's daughter, he was called Ron, his pen name was Ronan, and he was also called Ryokuho. In his youth, he was also called Yoan. In 1811 (Bunka 8), he was adopted by Ueda Genshin (Shinsai), a physician of the Tsuyama domain and a Dutch scholar. He initially studied Chinese medicine through such books as Suwen and Shanghanlun, and also walked through the mountains and fields to become familiar with botany. In 1813, he became acquainted with Iwasaki Kanen and Hanato Gunpo, who had been invited to a products fair by his adoptive father, and in 1814 he met Captain Doeff (in office 1803-17) at the Ishimachi Inn. In the same year, he began to seriously study Dutch, and studied under Baba Sajuro, Yoshio Tsunezo, Yoshio Chujiro, and others.

江戸後期の蘭学者，医者。江戸呉服門外第一街で，大垣藩医江沢養樹(本姓中島氏，越後見付の人，号は天倪道人，蘭学者)を父に，江沢養寿の娘を母に生まれ，名は榕，号を榕菴といい，緑舫とも称した。青年時代養菴と称したこともある。1811年(文化8)津山藩医で蘭学者の宇田川玄真(榛斎)の養嗣子となり，初め《素問》《傷寒論》等により漢方医学を学ぶかたわら，山野を歩いて本草学に親しみ，13年には養父が物産会に招いた岩崎灌園･花戸群芳らと交わり，14年にはカピタンのドゥーフ(1803‐17在任)と石町旅館で会い，同年からオランダ語を本格的に習いはじめ，馬場佐十郎，吉雄常三，吉雄忠次郎らについて学んだ。
