A mountain range stretching about 300 km from east to west on the northwestern border between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. The highest point is Mount Tastau at 2,992 m. There are almost no trees. Major caravan routes run through both the northern and southern foothills, and the border trading city of Tacheng is located at the southern foothills.
