A town in southern Benin. Capital of Zou department. Located about 100 km northwest of Porto-Novo. Founded in the early 17th century. It soon became the capital of the Kingdom of Abomey (later Dahomey), and traded with Europe until the end of the 19th century. It was the center of palm oil, palm kernels, and peanut production, and was the site of processing and brick production. The royal palace was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1985. Other sites include the royal tombs and a museum. Population 54,418 (estimated 1992). ベナン南部の町。ズー県の県都。ポルトノボ北西約 100kmに位置。 17世紀初期に建設。まもなくアボメー (のちダオメー) 王国の首都となり,19世紀末までヨーロッパと交易。パーム油,パーム核,ナンキンマメなどの生産地帯の中心地で,それらの集散,加工が行なわれ,煉瓦もつくられる。王宮は 1985年世界遺産の文化遺産に登録。ほかに王家の墓,博物館がある。人口5万 4418 (1992推計) 。
