Refractories are made by melting refractory raw materials in an electric furnace and pouring them into a mold in the same way as metals. Electrocast refractories were developed in the United States in 1926 and were used in glass kilns as alumina-silica refractories, which gave them revolutionary durability. While ordinary refractories are particle-bonded and have many pores, electrocast refractories have a monolithic structure with almost no pores, which significantly reduces contact reactions with the molten material and greatly extends their durability. Another feature is that new synthetic minerals can be obtained by electric melting, such as the alumina-silica synthetic mullite 3Al 2 O 3 ・2SiO 2 .
