A cappella is a group of musicians who composed church music in the strict a cappella style, mainly in Rome, from the late 16th century to the early 17th century. Representative composers include Palestrina, Giovanni Maria Nanino (c. 1545-1607), Francesco Soriano (1549-1621), Giovanni Francesco Anerio (c. 1567-1630), and the Spaniard Victoria. In the 17th century, the term "stile antico" (old style) refers to the group of musicians who composed religious music in the style of Palestrina and others. In the strict atmosphere of the Counter-Reformation, 16th-century Roman musicians composed pure a cappella masses and motets that rejected the unstable expression of emotion that could be achieved through chromatic techniques, and in contrast to their contemporary Venetian counterparts, they refrained from using instruments other than the organ in churches. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Allegri, G." is listed below.
