Realist novels reached a high level through the works of Nicolae Filimon (1819-65), Duiliu Zamfirescu (1858-1922), Ioan Slavici (1848-1925), and Alexandru Odobescu (1834-95). Under the influence of French Symbolism, Alexandru Macedonski (1854-1920) tried to innovate the poetic form, and in Transylvania, where the nationalist movement was intensifying, George Coşbuc (1866-1918) sang of the suffering and longings of the people, and the tradition was inherited by the next generation, Goga. …
