…The first of the family, Heinrich von Gmünd (date of birth and death unknown), built the elevated chancel of the Church of the Holy Cross (Heiligkreuzkirche) in Schwäbisch Gmünd (construction started in 1351), which marked the beginning of late Gothic architecture in Germany. His son Peter Parler (1330-99) was invited by German Emperor Charles IV to Prague, where he worked on the construction of the cathedral and Karl's Bridge. He also produced sculptures, and his own tombstone and busts in the cathedral (1365-85) are notable for the rise of realism. …
