A card game with a strong element of gambling and requiring advanced technique. There are dozens of ways to play poker, but the common features of poker are that players place bets using poker chips and that players make set combinations with their cards to win or lose. Poker combinations include: (1) Straight Flush - Five cards in a row of the same suit; (2) Four of a Kind - Four cards of the same number; (3) Full House - Three cards of the same number and two cards of another number; (4) Flush - Five cards of the same suit; (5) Straight - Five cards in a row; (6) Three of a Kind - Three cards of the same number; (7) Two Pair - Two sets of two cards of the same number; (8) One Pair - Two cards of the same number; (9) No Pair - Any hand that does not belong to any of the above combinations. In most rules, Ace is the highest and the lower the combination, but there are some rules where the lower the combination, the stronger the hand (lowball). There are draw poker, in which players can exchange as many cards as they like, and stud poker, in which players cannot exchange cards. The player with the highest legal hand takes all the chips bet by everyone else.

ギャンブル性が強く，高度のテクニックも要するカードゲーム。何十種類もの遊び方があるが，ポーカーとして共通していることはポーカーチップを使ってベット (賭け) をすることと，持札で決められた組合せをつくり勝敗を決することである。組合せの役は，(1) ストレートフラッシュ　同種のカードの5枚連続。 (2) フォーカード　同数字4枚。 (3) フルハウス　同数字3枚と他の同数字2枚。 (4) フラッシュ　同種5枚。 (5) ストレート　5枚連続。 (6) スリー・オブ・ア・カインド (スリーカード) 　同数字3枚。 (7) ツーペア　同数字2枚の2組。 (8) ワンペア　同数字2枚。 (9) ノーペア　上記のどの組合せにも属していない手。ほとんどのルールではAが最高で以下順々に弱くなるが，なかには役が低いほど強いルールもある (ローボール) 。持札を好みの枚数だけ交換できるドローポーカーと，交換できないスタッドポーカーがある。規定による最高の役をもった人が，他の人が賭けたチップをすべて取る。
