The unifying power of Kievan Rus was not that strong. In reality, several city-states or territorial states with the Grand Prince of Kievan Rus at their apex only maintained a loose unity by recognizing the Grand Prince's suzerainty and right to collect tribute. Novgorod, which could be said to be one of the centers of the ellipse, was particularly strong in independence, and successive Grand Princes of Kievan Rus often had trouble with the rebellion and secession of the eldest son of the family based there.
