Phonemics

The branch of phonology that analyzes sounds or phonemes is called phonology. In this case, a distinction is sometimes made between European phonology and American phonemics.

In European phonology, the phonological theory of the Prague School of Linguistics has been central since the 1930s, and deals with the assignment of phonemes and the system of phonemes.
