Ruddy Kingfisher (English name: Ruddy Kingfisher)

A bird of the order Coraciiformes and family Alcedinidae (illustration). Total length is about 25 cm. Its entire body is a beautiful deep reddish brown with bluish-white feathers on its lower back. Its beak is large and yellowish red. Its legs are also red. It breeds widely from the temperate zone to the tropics of eastern Asia, and those that breed in the north migrate to the tropics to spend the winter. It migrates to Japan as a summer bird around May and breeds there. From Kyushu northward, it mainly lives in broadleaf forests along rivers in mountainous areas. It is one of the most difficult birds to observe because its population is relatively small and it has a strong tendency to avoid people.

ブッポウソウ目カワセミ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約25cm。全身が美しい濃赤褐色で，腰に青白色の羽毛がある。くちばしは大きく，黄色みを帯びた赤色。脚も赤い。アジア東部の温帯から熱帯地域に広く繁殖し，北方で繁殖するものは熱帯に渡って越冬する。日本には，5月ごろ全国各地に夏鳥として渡来し繁殖する。九州以北では主として山地の川沿いの広葉樹林に生息する。生息数が比較的少なく，しかも，人を避ける性質が強いので，観察しにくい鳥の一つである。
