Kikugawa

Japanese: 菊川 - きくがわ
Kikugawa
This is a former town area in the north of Kikugawa City, in the southwest of Shizuoka Prefecture. It is located in the middle and upper reaches of the Kikugawa River. In 1954, Horinouchi Town, Rokugo Village, Yokochi Village, Kamo Village, and Uchida Village were merged to form Kikugawa Town. In 1955, Kawashiro Village was incorporated. In 2005, it was merged with Ogasa Town to form Kikugawa City. The area is dominated by the Makinohara Plateau in the east, the Ogasayama Hills in the west, and the Kikugawa River flowing south in the center, creating a fairly wide valley bottom plain. It has been open since ancient times, and contains Yayoi ruins, cave tombs, burial mounds, and remains of the jori system. Horinouchi, the central settlement, was the castle site of the powerful Yokochi clan during the Sengoku period. Tea trading is thriving, with many tea-related factories in particular, and the city is one of the leading tea picking machine manufacturers in the country. In the surrounding areas, tea is cultivated, as well as rice and greenhouse gardening.

Kikugawa

The former town area in the central eastern part of Shimonoseki City, in western Yamaguchi Prefecture. It occupies the Tabe Basin, which opens up at the confluence of the midstream Koyagawa River and its tributary, the Tabe River. In 1955, the villages of Kikugawa and Toyotomi and part of Uchihi Village merged to form a town. In 2005, it merged with one city and three towns, Shimonoseki City, Toyoda Town, Toyoura Town, and Toyokita Town, to form Shimonoseki City. Kikugawa is another name for the Tabe River. Tabe, the central settlement, developed as a market town in the early modern period. Its main industry is agriculture, mainly rice cultivation, and its specialties include Kikugawa watermelons, Kikugawa somen noodles, sake, and soy sauce. It is home to Kikugawa Onsen. The northern part belongs to Toyota Prefectural Natural Park.

Kikugawa

A river that originates at Mt. Awagatake (514m) in the southwest of Shizuoka Prefecture, northeast of Kakegawa City, and flows into the Enshu Nada Sea. Its total length is 29km. The alluvial plain between Mt. Ogasayama and the Makinohara Plateau is covered with rice fields that still retain the remains of the jori system. Sand dunes developed at the river mouth, making it difficult to drain downstream, and flooding often occurred, but progress has been made in improving the area, turning it into a grain-producing region.
