Industrial water - Sangyōyōsui

Japanese: 産業用水 - さんぎょうようすい

Water used in industries such as industry, agriculture, and commerce. Service industries, government offices, and schools are also included in industry, so all water used other than household water can be called industrial water. Fishing cannot exist without lakes and the sea, but the water from lakes and the sea itself in this case is not called industrial water (however, it is not clear whether water from these sources should be called industrial water when it is used for aquaculture, etc.). Water can be broadly divided into freshwater and seawater. The potential amount of freshwater resources in Japan can be thought of as about 450 billion m3/year, calculated by subtracting evaporation from the total annual rainfall. In comparison, the amount of freshwater currently used is roughly 14 billion m3 per year for drinking water, 49 billion m3 for industrial use (of which 1 billion m3 is supplied from the drinking water supply), 55 billion m3 for agricultural use, and 400 billion m3 for hydroelectric power generation.

工業，農業，商業などの産業に使われる用水。サービス業，官公署，学校も産業に含められているから，家庭用水以外の用水はすべて産業用水ということができる。漁業は湖沼や海がなくては成り立たないが，この場合の湖沼や海の水そのものは産業用水とはいわない(ただし，これらの水を引き入れて養殖などに使う場合，これを産業用水と呼ぶべきかどうかは明確にされていない)。　用水を大別すると淡水と海水とになる。日本の淡水資源の賦存量は，年間総降雨量から蒸発量を差し引いた約4500億m3/年と考えることができ，これに対して，現在使われている淡水の用水量は，概略して，年間，上水道140億m3，工業用水490億m3(うち10億m3は上水道より供給)，農業用水550億m3，水力発電用水4000億m3程度となっている。
