Autari's son, King Agilulfo (reigned 590-616), who restored the monarchy in 584, appointed influential Romans who had remained in the country to his court, and converted to Catholicism in 607. In addition, the capital was established in Pavia around 626, and a bureaucratic, administrative, and police system modeled after the Byzantine Empire was introduced, marking the beginning of the Lombard state in earnest.
