A type of physical therapy. A treatment for illnesses that applies electrical energy, utilizing the electricity's stimulating and calming effects on the central and peripheral nerves, and stimulating effects on muscles. Therapies that use low-frequency current include continuous current (DC), low-frequency AC, and intermittent continuous current (rectangular wave, triangular wave, etc.), and are used for peripheral nerve paralysis, peripheral circulatory disorders, neuralgia, etc. It is also used in conjunction with a hot bath (water electric bath). In continuous current, the anode of the conductor (electrode) calms stimulated nerves, and the cathode increases the excitability of the paralyzed area. It is also possible to soak the conductor in a medicinal solution and introduce the drug into the body as ions. Other treatments include high-frequency therapy and electrostatic therapy.

理学療法の一種。電気的エネルギーを応用した病気の治療法で，電気の中枢・末梢神経に対する刺激・鎮静作用，筋肉に対する刺激作用などを利用。低周波電流を利用するものには，平流（直流）・低周波交流・断続平流（直角波，三角波等）療法があり，末梢神経性麻痺(まひ)，末梢循環障害，神経痛などに適用。温浴と併用もされる（水電気浴）。平流では，導子（電極）の陽極は刺激状態の神経を鎮静し，陰極は麻痺部の興奮性を高める。また導子に薬液をしみ込ませ，薬物をイオンとして体内に入れることもできる。そのほか高周波療法や静電気療法などがある。
