...the wave of violent Jewish persecution (pogroms) in 1881-82 and the reactionary policies of the Tsarist government dashed hopes of Jewish liberation. With the beginning of mass Jewish migration to Western Europe and America and the beginning of the collapse of the traditional and closed Jewish ghetto society, a mixture of nationalism, socialism, and a kind of romanticism spread among Jewish intellectuals, and as a concrete example of this, a movement called "Love of Zion" was born among young people and students at the urging of Perets Smolenskin (1842-85). They emigrated in small groups to Palestine and attempted to establish Jewish settlements there.
