A collection of essays by the British essayist C. Lamb. The first volume was published in 1823, and the second volume in 1833. Most of the essays were published in the London Magazine, which was founded in 1820. The essays are written in a unique style, mixing exquisite humor and heartfelt pathos with the author's own experiences, and are considered to be the pinnacle of British essay literature. Particularly well-known masterpieces include "Christ's Hospital Five and Thirty Years Ago," which describes his childhood memories of his alma mater, "The Superannuated Man," in which he talks about his feelings after retirement, "Old China," a recollection of the difficult life of his youth, "A Dissertation upon Roast Pig" and "A Praise of Chimney Sweepers," which are light-hearted essays, and "Dream Children," which helps one to forget the loneliness of being single.
