However, the format for clearly citing books was not established until the Southern Qi and Liang dynasties, and the Gunzai Reading Journal dates the origin of the similar books to this period. The earliest of these is the 720-volume Hualin Plenum, which was completed over a period of eight years by Emperor Wu of the Liang dynasty, who mobilized over 700 scholars, including Xu Mian, to the Hualinyuan Academy. The 360-volume Xiwen Dian Yulan of the Northern Qi dynasty was compiled based on the Hualin Plenum, which was then shortened to one-third, 100 volumes, and poetry and prose were added to the Yiwen Ruiju of the Tang dynasty, and the 1,000-volume Taiping Yulan of the early Song dynasty expanded the Xiwen Dian Yulan by three times.
