1811‐79 An Icelandic scholar and politician. He spent many years in Copenhagen, where he edited and published medieval Icelandic literary works and historical documents, and ran a literary society. Around 1840, he achieved the restoration of the Althingi (Icelandic National Assembly), which had been abolished in 1800, and from then on became a leader in the movement to secure autonomy for his country from Denmark, achieving the complete liberalization of trade (1854) and the granting of Icelandic legislative power to Althingi (1874).
