An Icelandic scholar and politician. He spent many years in Copenhagen, where he edited and published medieval Icelandic literary works and historical documents, and ran a literary society. Around 1840, he achieved the restoration of the Althingi (Icelandic National Assembly), which had been abolished in 1800, and from then on became a leader in the movement to secure autonomy for his country from Denmark, achieving the complete liberalization of trade (1854) and the granting of Icelandic legislative power to Althingi (1874). His birthday, June 17, was the day independence was declared in 1944, and has since become Iceland's Independence Day.

アイスランドの学者，政治家。多年コペンハーゲンにあって中世アイスランドの文学作品と史料の校訂刊行，文学協会の運営に従事。1800年に廃止されたアルシンギ(アイスランド国民議会)の再興を実現させた40年ごろから，デンマークに対する祖国の自治獲得運動の指導者となり，通商の完全自由化(1854)，アイスランド関係立法権のアルシンギへの付与(1874)などを実現する。誕生日6月17日は，1944年独立宣言のなされた日で，以降アイスランドの独立記念日となっている。
