The capital of Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil. Population 164,334 (1991). A port city located on São Luís Island. Founded in 1612. Many colonial-style buildings dating back to the 17th century, including the Pedras Church built in 1614. Connected to various regions by air and road. About 830 km to Belém by land. Vegetable oils are produced from babassu palm, cottonseed, etc. Plans are underway to develop an industrial park in the suburb of Itaqui, as well as plans to build a port for exporting iron ore from the Carajás mine in Pará state and a steelworks.
