The capital of Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil. Population 164,334 (1991). A port city located on São Luís Island. Founded in 1612. Many colonial-style buildings dating back to the 17th century, including the Pedras Church built in 1614. Connected to various regions by air and road. About 830 km to Belém by land. Vegetable oils are produced from babassu palm, cottonseed, etc. Plans are underway to develop an industrial park in the suburb of Itaqui, as well as plans to build a port for exporting iron ore from the Carajás mine in Pará state and a steelworks.

ブラジル北東部，マラニョン州の州都。人口16万4334(1991)。サン･ルイス島上に位置する港湾都市。1612年に創設。14年建設のペドラス教会をはじめ17世紀以来のコロニアル風の建築物が多い。空路および道路で各地と結ばれる。ベレンまで陸路約830km。ババスーヤシ，綿実など植物油製造業がある。郊外のイタキに工業団地造成計画が進み，パラ州のカラジャス鉱山の鉄鉱石輸出港，製鉄所建設の計画も進んでいる。
