Hayashi Jussai

[Died] July 14, 1841 (Tenpo 12). Edo A Confucian scholar of the Edo Shogunate in the late Edo period. His given name was Heng. His pen names were Shushin, Kokan, and Tokusen. His childhood pen name was Kumazo. His other pen names were Shoken and Tenbaku. He was the third son of Matsudaira Joun of the Mino Iwamura Domain. He first studied under Oshio Tomeyoshi and Hattori Chuzan of the Sorai school, and later studied under Shibui Taimuro and Hosoi Heishu of the Eclectic school. In 1793 (Kansei 5), when University Head Hayashi Kinpo died without an heir, he took over the Hayashi family and, together with Koga Seiri and Bito Nishu, worked in the Shogunate's educational administration, carrying out groundbreaking educational reforms. He supervised the compilation of works such as "Tokugawa Jikki" and "Buke Myomoku Sho," and also compiled Chinese books lost in China to create the "Lost Collection of Books." He is said to have been the chief priest of the Hayashi family and the founder of the family. He is the author of such works as "Shoken Zatsuroku," "Eibutsu Shi," and "Shonsai Bunko."

江戸時代後期の江戸幕府の儒官。名は衡。字は叔沈,公鑑,徳詮。幼字は熊蔵。別号は蕉軒,天瀑。美濃岩村藩松平乗蘊の3男。初め大塩鼈渚,徂徠学派の服部仲山らに学び,のち折衷学派の渋井太室,細井平洲らに師事。寛政5 (1793) 年大学頭林錦峯が死に,嗣子がなかったので,林家を継ぎ,古賀精里,尾藤二洲らと幕府の教育行政にあたり,画期的な学制改革を行なった。『徳川実紀』『武家名目抄』などの編纂事業を監修し,中国で失われた漢籍を集めて『佚存叢書』も作った。林家中興の祭酒 (大学頭) といわれる。『蕉軒雑録』『永物詩』『述斎文稿』などの著書がある。
