A theatrical theory proposed by German playwright B. Brecht. Brecht criticized the traditional Western theater since Aristotle and advocated narrative theater, using the alienation effect as a means to achieve this. For example, the audience is prevented from emotionally assimilating to the events on stage by visual means such as singing, dancing, placards, and images, or by actors stepping out of their roles to criticize them. The audience is expected to intellectually understand the stage, and this is further linked to the socialist ideas pursued by Brecht. This methodology has become known worldwide, along with the many masterpieces produced by the Berliner Ensemble, which Brecht led.
