The name of a style of Noh otsuzumi performers. The founder of the school was Ishii Shozaemon Shigenaga, a disciple of Higuchi Kyuzaemon, a master who received a stipend of 700 koku from Hideyoshi. For generations, the school lived in Kyoto and served the Kaga and Owari domains. Ishii Issai the 10th (1827-1899.1.21.), along with Shimizu Zenchi of the Takayasu school and Tsumura Mataki of the Kadono school, was known as one of the three great masters of otsuzumi. After Issai's death, the head family line was discontinued. Currently, Taniguchi Masayoshi serves as the acting head family and continues to work in Kyoto and Nagoya. It has the largest and most complex number of te-gumi of any current school, and has partially preserved ancient forms not found in other schools.
