A village in the Zaria region of central Nigeria. In 1931, two terracotta human heads were discovered in a tin mine in the village. Since then, hundreds of terracotta human figures in the same style as the Nok heads have been excavated in a vast area stretching 480 km from east to west and 330 km from north to south, located north of the confluence of the Niger River and the Benue River. These terracotta figures are called Nok art or Nok culture (civilization) after the place where they were first discovered. They date from around 500 BC to around 200 AD.
