Isophthalic acid (English spelling)

Japanese: イソフタル酸 - いそふたるさん（英語表記）isophthalic acid

A type of aromatic dicarboxylic acid. Also known as m(meta)-benzenedicarboxylic acid. It is produced by oxidizing m-xylene.

Colorless crystals. Soluble in acetic acid, acetone, ethanol (ethyl alcohol), etc., but almost insoluble in hydrocarbon solvents. It is acidic and forms salts with various metals, and reacts with various alcohols in the presence of sulfuric acid to form diesters. It is used as a polyester modifier and a raw material for heat-resistant polymers.

芳香族ジカルボン酸の一種。m(メタ)-ベンゼンジカルボン酸ともいう。m-キシレンを酸化すると生成する。

　無色の結晶。酢酸、アセトン、エタノール（エチルアルコール）などに溶けるが、炭化水素溶媒にはほとんど溶けない。酸性を示し、種々の金属と塩をつくるほか、硫酸の存在下で種々のアルコールと反応してジエステルを生成する。ポリエステルの改質材、耐熱性高分子の原料として用いられる。
