The publication of Ivan Kotlyarevsky's (1769-1838) Aeneida in 1798 marked the beginning of the development of modern Ukrainian literary language and heralded the beginning of the Ukrainian national renaissance in the 19th century. The powerful poetry and life of the poet T. G. Shevchenko (1814-61), a serf-born poet, made him the leading poet of the Ukrainian nation.
