A general term for scales that incorporate electronic technology in the balancing mechanism and reading mechanism, also known as electric scales. There are two types of balancing mechanism: the zero-position type, which electrically detects the minute displacement of the scale's beam due to the load and adjusts the electromagnetic force to keep the beam horizontal, and the load cell type, which attaches a strain gauge to an elastic block and applies a load directly to a load cell that generates an electrical signal proportional to the deformation of the elastic body, thereby detecting an electrical signal proportional to the load. The reading mechanism has a wide variety of functions, including a digital display of the detection signal from the balancing mechanism, a built-in microcomputer that sets the unit price of the item and displays the price according to the item's mass, a tare erase function that subtracts the mass of the container (tare) from the measurement result, and a printout of the measurement result.

はかりのつり合い機構，読取機構などに電子技術を導入したはかりの総称で，電気式はかり(電気ばかり)とも呼ばれる。つり合せ機構には，荷重によるはかりのさおの微小な変位を電気的に検出し，さおが水平になるよう電磁力を加減する零位式と，弾性体ブロックにひずみゲージをはりつけ，弾性体の変形に比例した電気信号を発生するロードセルに荷重を直接に加え，荷重に比例した電気信号を検出するロードセル式がある。読取機構には，つり合せ機構の検出信号をディジタル表示するほか，マイクロコンピューターを内蔵させ品物の単価をセットして品物の質量に応じた料金の表示，入れ物(風袋)の質量を測定の結果から差し引く風袋消去，測定結果のプリントアウトなど，多種多様の機能をもつものがある。
