Japanese: イヌガンソク - いぬがんそく

A medium-sized fern of the Melastomataceae family (illustration), given its Japanese name Inuganashi (dog's foot) because its sporophylls resemble the legs of a wild goose. The rhizome is thick and short, creeping, and the leaves grow in clusters. The leaves show a marked dimorphism. The veins are free. The vegetative leaves are broadly ovate to oblong, and can exceed 1 m in length, with large petiole bases densely covered with pale brown scales. The leaves are simply pinnately compound, with pinnae that are medially to deeply lobed. The sporophylls are much shorter than the vegetative leaves, and the pinnae are everted and rod-shaped. The sporophyll clusters are enclosed in an outward-facing spherical envelope, which is further enclosed by the leaf blade.

胞子葉がガン(雁)の足に似ているところから，犬雁足の和名が与えられた，メシダ科の中型のシダ（イラスト）。根茎は太く短くはい，葉を叢生（そうせい）する。葉は著しい2形を示す。葉脈は遊離脈。栄養葉は広卵形から長楕円形で，長さ1mをこえることがあり，葉柄基部は大型で淡褐色の鱗片を密につける。単羽状複葉で羽片は中裂から深裂。胞子葉は栄養葉よりもはるかに短く，羽片は葉身部が反転して棒状である。胞子囊群は外向きの球形の包膜で包まれ，さらに葉身でも包まれる。
