A city in central-western Chiba prefecture facing Tokyo Bay. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. The city area occupies the Boso Hills and the lower reaches of the Koito River, with the inland area being mainly agricultural. In 1961, a large steelworks and housing complex by Nippon Steel Corporation was built on reclaimed land on the bay coast, and the city developed as the core of the southern Keiyo industrial region, with manufactured goods shipments of 589 billion yen (2003), the fifth highest in the prefecture. The Uchibo Line, Kururi Line, and Tateyama Expressway run through the city. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 318.81 km2 .
