Marot, Clément
Born: 1496. Cahors, Périgord
Died September 12, 1544. Turin. French poet. Son of Jean Marot, a great rhyming poet. He wrote poetry under the patronage of Marguerite d'Angoulême, sister of King Francis I. He used traditional poetic forms such as epistolary, epigram, and elegy, dealing with personal subjects and current issues, and expressing an elegant and fresh sensibility. He also introduced new forms such as the sonnet from Italy, contributing to the development of French poetry. His representative works include Le Temple de Cupido (1515), L'Enfer (Hell) (written in 26, published in 39), and L'Adolescence clémentine (32). His other works include The Romance of the Rose (29) and the compilation of Billon's poems (32), as well as a translation of the Psalms of the Bible, Les Psaumes (41-42).
