A marine fish of the family Sillago, order Perciformes. Also known as Japanese whiting (illustration). It is found along almost all of the coasts of Japan except for parts of Hokkaido, as well as in the Korean peninsula, China, Taiwan, and the Philippines. It is also said to be found further south in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, but this is unclear due to taxonomic confusion. It is commonly found along the coasts of Japan and is a very popular fishing fish, but it does not have many local names. It is called kisu or shirogisu in the Kanto region, and magis in Tokyo. It is called kisugo in the Kansai region, the Seto Inland Sea, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
