School bus (English)

Japanese: スクール･バス（英語表記）school bus

A bus used by children and students to commute to school. In addition to being used to reduce the time and effort of children and students traveling long distances to school, it is also used by kindergartens and schools for the blind, deaf, and special needs to prevent traffic accidents on the way to school. In particular, as small schools in depopulated and remote areas are being consolidated and closed, commuting distances are being extended, and the use of buses is increasing. In island areas, school boats are used for maritime transportation. School buses developed in the United States from the 1920s onwards as a solution to the problem of small schools in rural areas, but in Japan they began to be used for students at remote schools and special education schools after World War II, and more recently they have become popular as shuttle buses for kindergarten children.

児童･生徒の通学に利用されるバス。遠距離通学にともなう児童･生徒の時間･労力のむだをはぶくため利用されるほか，幼稚園や盲･聾･養護学校では通学途上の交通事故防止の点から使われている。とくに，過疎，僻地（へきち）における小規模校の統廃合がすすむなかで通学距離が延長され，その利用も増加している。島嶼（とうしよ）地域では海上交通のためスクール･ボートがある。スクール･バスは，1920年代以降アメリカにおいて地方の小規模校解消策として発達したが，日本では，第2次大戦後僻地学校･特殊教育学校生徒のために利用されるようになり，最近では幼稚園児の送迎バスとして普及している。
