Delft - Delft (English spelling)

A city in the western part of the Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. Population 96,180 (2001). Located halfway between The Hague and Rotterdam, the River Schie runs through the city. The city is home to many industries, including pottery, famous for Delft ware, as well as pharmaceuticals, tobacco, and food. The city was founded in 1075, and acquired city rights in 1246. The pottery industry developed at the end of the 16th century, reaching its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries. It then fell into decline, but in the 20th century, pottery production was revived using modern technology. It was also an important commercial center until the 16th century, when Rotterdam rose to prominence. The old town is surrounded by a rectangular moat, and is home to many historical buildings, such as the Gothic-style Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk, the Renaissance-style City Hall, and the Prinsenhof, the palace of the Prince of Orange where Willem the Silent was assassinated in 1584, making it a popular tourist destination. It is the birthplace of the international law scholar Grotius and the 17th century painter Jan Vermeer, whose landscape painting "View of Delft" is famous. It is also home to the University of Technology.

オランダ西部、ゾイト・ホラント州西部の都市。人口9万6180（2001）。ハーグとロッテルダムの中間にあり、スヒー川が市内を貫流する。デルフト焼で有名な陶器をはじめ、薬品、たばこ、食品などの工業が立地する。町は1075年に建設され、1246年に都市権を獲得、16世紀末より陶器業が発達し、17～18世紀にその最盛期を迎えた。その後一時衰退したが、20世紀に入り近代技術による陶器生産が復活している。またロッテルダムが台頭する16世紀までは重要な商業中心地でもあった。旧市街は四角形の堀で囲われ、ゴシック様式の旧教会と新教会、ルネサンス様式の市庁舎、オラニエ家皇太子の宮殿で1584年にウィレム沈黙公が暗殺されたプリンセンホフなど歴史的建築物を有し、観光客が多い。国際法学者グロティウスや17世紀の画家ヤン・フェルメールの生地で、フェルメールの風景画『デルフトの眺望』は有名。工科大学の所在地。
